The Virginia Governor’s Cup® is the state’s most stringent wine competition, and year after year it recognizes the best wines being produced here in Virginia.
This year, to connect Virginia wine lovers with the best of Virginia, Virginia Wine is introducing the Gold Medal Wine Trail, a mobile passport that brings gold medal-winning wineries from the 2021 Virginia Governor’s Cup® competition right to your fingertips.
After sampling a record-breaking 544 entries in 2021, world-class judges awarded 47 wineries, cideries and meaderies across the Commonwealth with 96 gold medals. Gold medalists represent five diverse regions across the Commonwealth: Central Virginia, Northern Virginia, Shenandoah Valley, Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay. Check out the full list of gold medalists here.
By signing up at taste.virginiawine.org, consumers will have access to the Gold Medal Wine Trail—which includes discounts and prizes—through December 31, 2021.
Passholders who check-in at 12 participating locations will be eligible for a free Virginia Wine wine tumbler, while supplies last. Select wineries are offering their own deals, too. From free tastings of gold medal-winning wine to discounts on bottle purchases, the trail opens the door to an exclusive Virginia Wine experience.
“Year in and year out, we’re seeing the Virginia Wine industry continue to push boundaries and make distinctive wines that show confidence, style and the character of the region,” said Jay Youmans, MW and judging director of the competition since 2011.

In addition to awarding gold, silver and bronze medals, the Virginia Governor’s Cup® also recognizes the 12 highest-scoring red and white wines as the Virginia Governor’s Cup Case®, with the highest-scoring wine taking home the coveted Governor’s Cup®. New to the competition in 2021, the Best in Show Cider is awarded to the highest-scoring cider. The Virginia Governor’s Cup competition is hosted by the Virginia Wineries Association, in partnership with the Virginia Wine Board and the Virginia Vineyards Association.
