A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg announced the addition of a new, boldly flavored bourbon to the distillery’s permanent line of spirits. The Isaac Bowman Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Port Barrels packs in flavors of cherry, apple and toasted oak, and pays homage to the late Revolutionary War soldier and youngest of the Bowman brothers.
This war-inspired spirit is prepared the same way as the limited edition Abraham Bowman Port Finished Bourbon, which was named World’s Best Bourbon by Whisky Magazine in 2016. A. Smith Bowman Distillery combined American Oak and French Limousin Oak from Virginia and Portugal to create special distilling barrels. The dark amber and red liquor is aged anywhere from three to six months, during which Master Distiller Brian Prewitt completed monthly taste tests to ensure the bourbon would be removed from the barrels at the optimum time.
Prewitt describes the Isaac Bowman Port Barrel Finished Bourbon as bold and sweet, with a lingering smooth finish. “The nose greets you with our characteristic cherry and baked apple, but supplemented with jammy fruit notes and balanced with the enticing aroma of vanilla, brown spice and toasted pecans,” says Prewitt.
Portions of the Isaac Bowman Port Barrel Finished Bourbon will be reserved for the creation of the next batch to warrant consistency in the spirit’s flavor and color. The bourbon’s first launch will be exclusive to Virginia and can be purchased for $39.99. For more information about the craft distillery and release dates, visit their website.
