Now, 20 years later, South Africa’s time to shine on the wine stage has definitely arrived. “A significant proportion of the best South African wines today were not being made in 2000,” states Tim James in his comprehensive book Wines of the New South Africa. Today we are seeing racy, intense sauvignon blancs, incredible Chenin Blancs (referred to as Steens), and Pinotage – the love it or loath it grape that we can’t get enough of. Come take a survey of wines and varietals from a land of stunning beauty; Compare Virginia & South Africa Sauvignon Blancs, Learn your steens from your pinotages; explore the world of emerging South Africa wines.

This tasting is for die hard wine geeks. We’ll reveal the best lessons learned from our own wine education as we went about learning to become winemakers. After 6 months of studying, calculating, measuring, blending and, of course, drinking wine, we’ll talk about some of the coolest things we learned. We’ll break down the metrics of judging wines by the 100 point scale and teach you how to get perfect pairings with food nibblers as we use eight 90-99 point wines to discuss each lesson.

Is it possible to pair desserts with our favorite mainstream wines? Better be careful, some of these flavors are in definite conflict … but it can be done. While you may be hard pressed to find anyone upset with the wrong wine & dessert pairing (it is wine and dessert after all) it is nice to show off a little knowledge when entertaining guests, not to mention the piece of mind in knowing that what you are serving won’t be conflicting. Come try desserts and wines and learn why some do and some don’t go well together.

Mapping out which wine regions to visit on a vacation to Spain? Even some Spaniards wouldn’t know where to begin. Well, here’s a secret: No matter where you are on the Iberian Peninsula, you’re never far from a vineyard—so don’t overthink it. Barcelona is a commuter train away from the historic cava houses of Penedès. Bierzo, the region wine geeks can’t stop fawning over, is a pleasant, quiet drive from León. And the “Sherry Triangle,” though it sounds a tad foreboding, can be explored on a painless day-trip from Seville. Whether you’re a casual wine drinker or a seasoned sommelier, we’ll taste our way through how to weave some vineyard-hopping into your Spanish vacation.

Although sipping on award-winning wines is a delight, once you bring food into the equation the experience moves to an extraordinary level of discovery. Scientists describe seven basic tastes: bitter, salty, sour, astringent, sweet, pungent (eg chili), and umami. There are however five basic tastes that the tongue is sensitive to: salt, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami, the taste of MSG. Experience a fun, educational, and delectable aha moment Food and Wine pairing class. You will learn how to appreciate your palate and pair wines – spanning from whites and rosés, to reds, dry, bubbly or sweet – with savory and sweet food selections.

Virginia Versus The World™ Thomas Jefferson had a vision … of vineyards lacing the Virginia landscape. And, along with the vines certain economic benefits – not to mention the resulting prestige, pleasure and refinement of enjoying fine wine. Nearly 300 farm wineries now dot the Commonwealth landcape. These special farms are putting Virginia on the map in the world wine market, protecting farmland with sustainable agriculture, and playing a major role in the State’s economic development as a burgeoning tourism draw. The wineries of Virginia continue to gain national and international recognition. Do you think Virginia wine is ready to go head-to-head with world class wine? Be the judge and jury in an exciting blind tasting as Virginia’s best varietals are pitted against their international competitors in a blind comparison tasting. Come judge for your self how well (or not so well) Virginia stacks up in the world wine arena.
